Ribbed skirts: what they are and why they flatter your figure

A ribbed skirt is a style made from knitted fabric with a characteristic, longitudinal weave. We sew them from the same cotton knit fabric as our dresses, 95% cotton and 5% elastane, produced to order in a Polish knitting mill. This rib knit has a unique weave that holds its shape, doesn't stretch out at the hips, and flatters the figure instead of just covering it.

On a skirt, vertical ribbing works differently than on a dress, exclusively affecting the lower half of the silhouette. Vertical lines draw the eye along the hips and legs, optically lengthening and slimming them. The elastic knit smoothly hugs the hips without creating a constricting effect, and the high waist emphasizes the waist and creates good proportions. The result: legs look longer, hips appear slimmer, and the entire silhouette is more elongated.

Lengths of ribbed skirts: mini, midi, and maxi

In the collection, you'll find three lengths, each with a different character and purpose.

Mini skirts reach above the knee; this is the most energetic length in the collection. A basic ribbed mini looks good in summer with sandals and a top, as well as in autumn with tights, boots, and a thick sweater. The fitted knit ensures that the skirt stays in place and doesn't ride up when walking.

Midi skirts reach mid-calf or below the calf; this is the most versatile length and the heart of this collection. A fitted, pencil-style ribbed midi skirt is a style that works from office to evening: in the morning with a white shirt and ankle boots, in the evening with a fitted top and high heels. The vertical ribbing at this length provides the strongest slimming effect.

Maxi skirts fall to the ankles, creating an elongated, minimalist line. A ribbed maxi is heavier and warmer than flowy viscose skirts, making it perfect for autumn and winter, draping along the legs instead of fluttering with every breeze. With a turtleneck in the same color, it creates a monochromatic set that looks like a coordinated outfit.

Basic styles: why simple cuts work best

The ribbed skirt collection is based on basic styles: simple, fitted cuts without unnecessary embellishments, zippers, or ruffles. This is a deliberate decision, as with ribbed knit fabric, the material itself is the embellishment. The longitudinal weave creates a delicate texture that gives the skirt character without any additional elements.

A basic style also has a practical advantage: the elastic waist without a zipper or buttons adapts to the body and is comfortable all day long, even when sitting. The skirt has no elements that could create imprints under a fitted top or sweater, so the entire outfit maintains a smooth, clean line. Simple basic cuts are also the foundation of a capsule wardrobe: one skirt works in dozens of combinations for many seasons, regardless of trends.

How a ribbed skirt flatters your hips and legs

The flattering effect of a ribbed skirt relies on three mechanisms working simultaneously. The first is the optics of the vertical line: the eye follows the ribs from top to bottom, making the hips and legs appear longer and slimmer. The second is the elasticity of the knit: 5% elastane ensures that the fabric hugs the silhouette evenly, smoothing the hip line instead of emphasizing every imperfection. The third is the weight of the weave: our rib knit is dense and stable, so the skirt drapes vertically downwards rather than clinging to the thighs.

This is what differentiates good ribbing from cheap ribbing: thin, loose knit emphasizes everything you'd rather not emphasize, while a dense, elastic weave smooths and shapes. If you've ever had a ribbed skirt that stretched out at the hips after one day of wear, it wasn't this type of ribbing.

Ribbed set: skirt and top in the same material

The strongest styling with a ribbed skirt is a set: a skirt and a ribbed topmade from the same knit fabric, in the same or complementary color. A monochromatic set in a single material creates an unbroken vertical line from shoulders to ankles, which is the strongest possible silhouette-lengthening effect, even stronger than a dress, because it allows the set to be separated into two independent wardrobe pieces.

A ribbed set also works economically: two pieces mean a minimum of six outfits – the complete set together, a skirt with a shirt, a skirt with a sweater, a top with jeans, a top under a blazer, a top with a skirt from another collection. This is slow fashion in practice: fewer items, more combinations.

How to style a ribbed skirt

For everyday wear: a ribbed midi skirt + a loose t-shirt or sweater tucked in + sneakers or flat ankle boots. The contrast of a loose top with a fitted bottom is the simplest recipe for an effortless look.

For work: a black, ecru, or coffee-colored midi skirt + a white shirt or thin turtleneck + pumps or block-heeled ankle boots. Ribbing looks elegant, and the elastic waist is comfortable for eight hours at a desk.

In autumn and winter: a midi or maxi skirt + a thick sweater or cardigan + boots. Ribbed knit fabric is warmer than viscose fabrics, and when paired with tights, it works even on cold days.

For mini and midi skirts in autumn, check out matte 20 DEN tights; black tights with a black skirt and boots create one continuous line that further lengthens the legs.

For an evening out: a midi or maxi skirt + a fitted top or bodysuit + high heels and minimalist jewelry. Monochromatic black from the waist down looks effortlessly expensive.

Ribbed skirts for various occasions

For everyday and work: the elastic waist, lack of zippers, and soft knit make it one of the most comfortable skirts you can wear all day, even when sitting.

For autumn and winter: dense cotton knit fabric is warmer than dress fabrics. With tights, boots, and a sweater, a ribbed skirt works throughout the cold season.

For evenings and meetings: a fitted midi or maxi with a matching top is elegance without a dress, a smart outfit that you can later break down into separate pieces and wear individually.

For travel: ribbed knit fabric doesn't wrinkle. You can roll the skirt into a ball, pack it in your suitcase, and wear it straight out of the bag, without ironing.

How to choose the size of a ribbed skirt

For a skirt, the hip circumference is most important; it determines the size. The waist is elastic and adapts to a wide range, so it doesn't have to be the main criterion. Measure your hips at the widest point and compare with the size chart.

Elastic knit with 5% elastane covers several classic sizes in one. If you're hesitant between sizes or fall between the table's ranges, write to us at contact@nudyess.live and provide your WAIST – HIPS measurements in centimeters, and we'll help you choose the size. Full measurements can be found in the size chart.

How to care for a ribbed skirt

Wash inside out, at a temperature of up to 30°C, on a delicate cycle, with a mild detergent. Avoid bleach and intense spinning, which weaken elastane fibers.

Do not tumble dry; high temperatures destroy elastane and cause the knit to lose its elasticity and the skirt its shaping ability. Dry flat: a skirt dried on a hanger may stretch under its own weight. If pilling appears on the knit, gently remove it with a fabric shaver; this is a natural phenomenon with cotton knits.

FAQ: frequently asked questions about ribbed skirts

Does a ribbed skirt have a slimming effect?

Yes. The vertical rib weave guides the eye along the silhouette, optically lengthening the hips and legs. The dense, elastic knit smooths the hip line instead of emphasizing imperfections. The strongest effect is achieved with midi length and by pairing the skirt with tights and shoes in the same color.

Does a ribbed skirt stretch out at the hips?

Ours does not, and this is the main difference compared to thin knits from chain stores. The rib knit produced to our order in a Polish knitting mill is dense and elastic, and 5% elastane ensures that the material returns to its shape after each wear. Proper care is essential: washing at 30°C and drying flat.

How to wear a ribbed midi skirt?

Simplest: with a loose sweater or t-shirt tucked in and ankle boots. For work: with a shirt or turtleneck and pumps. For an evening out: with a fitted top and high heels. In autumn and winter: with tights, boots, and a thick sweater. The contrast of a loose top with a fitted bottom always works.

What lengths of ribbed skirts are available?

Three lengths: mini (above the knee), midi (mid-calf or below the calf), and maxi (to the ankles). Midi is the most versatile, mini the most energetic, and maxi creates the most elongated, minimalist line.

Is a ribbed skirt suitable for winter?

Yes, cotton ribbed knit fabric is denser and warmer than dress fabrics. Paired with tights, boots, and a sweater, a midi or maxi skirt works throughout the autumn-winter season.

What is the difference between a ribbed skirt and a knit skirt?

Every ribbed skirt is knitted, but not every knitted skirt is ribbed. Ribbing is a specific, longitudinal knit weave that creates vertical lines on the fabric, and these are what provide the optical lengthening effect that plain knit fabric does not have.

How to choose the size of a skirt?

Measure your hips at the widest point; this is the key measurement. The waist is elastic and adapts to a wide range. Compare the result with the size chart, and if in doubt, write to contact@nudyess.live with your WAIST – HIPS measurements in centimeters.

Can I buy a skirt and top as a set?

Yes, skirts and tops from the ribbed collection are sewn from the same knit fabric and available in matching colors, so you can build your own set: choose a skirt and top in the same color. You can wear the set together or separate it into two independent wardrobe pieces.
